畫作前景瀰漫著謀殺和背叛的詭譎氣氛，亞當和夏娃為死去的孩子亞貝而嚎啕痛哭（左）；美麗的寡婦朱迪思 (Judith) 提著何樂弗尼 (Holofernes) 的無頭屍體，報復何 樂弗尼 的淫慾與摧毀家園的惡行（右）。
何其低沉悲觀！可能，是透納自己心境的寫照，因為他現實生活裡沒有一般人的幸運幸福，有過寡婦的生活關係，但還是終身未娶，可以交心的朋友很少很少。

作品《Light and Colour (Goethe‘s Theory)》取材自聖經舊約中摩西的創世記一書，描寫一個洪水泛濫過後的清晨，在無法控制的大自然災害中，男人被塑造成一個被動而消極的角色。畫面中央隱約的蛇，代表在荒野中可以治癒瘟疫的使者。
透納透過「歌德理論（色彩理論, Theory of Colors）」進行色彩、陰影、折射和色差的構築嘗試，將洪水與光線的無窮變幻，敘述光與色的對應關係。此概念的延伸發展，影響到1870年法國印象派的萌芽。
